Edge of Mercy is a dystopian suspense novel about a girl disguised as a boy, hiding in a community of survivors, defending her sister and herself from the hideous monsters outside the community, as well as, the human ones inside.

Six Sunday--Edge of Mercy

It's been an awesome couple of weeks around here. I'm having such a great time sharing Charlie's story with readers. It's been a little distracting (see my previous post), but I wouldn't change any of it.  Thank you to those who have been so very, very supportive.  Your excitement keeps me going.

Let's get to the good stuff.  In this scene, the monstrous Draghoul are fighting to get to the people hiding inside and Charlie dreams of someplace safe from it all:

In my mind, I combined the known with the unknown and escaped, away from the community and away from the Draghoul forever. If only it were that simple.
As far as I knew, the whole world struggled to survive just like we did, but there were rumors…well…one rumor, by someone who’d been there and come back…a rumor of a city that was safe. The city stood free of the Draghoul plague and offered its citizens food and shelter and a place where going out at night wasn’t a death sentence. Even the name of the city filled me with longing—Mercy.

Happy Writing and Reading,

Charlie hides her true identity, but her very presence places everyone around her in danger. With no other choice but to remain where she is, she stays with a community that might not be as benevolent as it appears. In this post-apocalyptic romance where a friend might be an enemy and an enemy might be a friend, seventeen-year-old Charlie protects her baby sister and herself from grotesque monsters outside the community as well as human ones inside. Will the truth she discovers about her protectors save her or ultimately doom her to a fate worse than death?

Make Me Write Heart of Mercy!

Besides the release and the welcome response, one of the best parts of my week so far has been looking at blog stats. No, I'm not a math nerd (though I did take and actually pass calculus) plus numbers don't usually make my day.  And in this case, it wasn't the statistical data that got me all excited anyway.  No, instead, I got a little giddy when I saw the search terms that led people to my blog.  Why?  Because, someone Googled whether there was a book two following Edge of Mercy.  Did you hear that?  Someone out there wants to know if the series continues.

Well, I'm here to tell you that indeed it does.  Heart of Mercy is the next book in the Mercy Series and it is well underway.  I'm going to be honest though.  I've been so busy this week trying to get word out about Edge of Mercy, I've not met my writing goals on Heart of Mercy.  So, this is my promise to you.  I will finish this book and the final one before 2012 ends.  My goal is to have Heart of Mercy out by the end of September and Escape from Mercy out by the end of November.

The funny thing is that search stream for the next book in the series motivated me to get back to the keyboard in a way nothing else ever has, so if you feel so inclined, drop me an occasional e-mail, comment here on the blog, basically bug me as much as you can to write these books.  I know you're going to love this story, so I've got to get it on paper (or screen, as the case may be).  With that said, I'm going to get back to typing.

Happy Reading and Writing,

C. C.

Six Sentence Sunday--Edge of Mercy

Yup-yup! I am so excited to announce that Edge of Mercy is available at all major online bookstores. Thanks for all the awesome feedback so far.

I've posted excerpts from Edge of Mercy on my other blog, but here are six more sentences from the story.  If you want to read earlier snippets or the short introductory fiction story I published, you can find them here (from three weeks ago on this blog), here and here.  Otherwise, let's get to the good stuff.  In this scene, the monstrous Draghoul are fighting to get to the people hiding inside:
Were they in the building? With knees raised to my chest, I sunk into myself, lifting my hands to my ears again. Fear pooled in my abdomen, but I couldn’t give in. When I was younger, my mother held me tightly when I was afraid, but my father pushed me to face those same fears. Now I was alone and understood my father’s lessons. Except for Star, I was completely alone.
